IT: THE NEW INDIAN MECCA
@ 2005-07-21 - 19:28:57Bangalore was getting saturated and Gurgaon got too crowded and marred by the red-tape. So the Indian IT industry went looking for fresh fields and pastures new and sure enough came back with its hands full if the recently concluded three-day IT conclave ‘E-Revolution 2005’,held at ‘The Taj’ Chandigarh is anything to go by.
For the uninitiated Chandigarh is the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, however being a union territory it is looked after by the central govt. Famous for its well planned layout, clean wide roads embellished with beautiful roundabouts and a lot of greenery, Chandigarh was the dream child of Pt.Jawaharlal Nehru and designed by the famous French architect Le Courbusier. It is a very compact warm and yet a modern city having excellent educational, medical, housing and recreational amenities.
Earlier the city’s proximity to Pakistan (about 500 kms) discouraged investors however the thaw between indo-pak relations has eradicated all geo-political concerns and promoted investor-confidence.
The New York Times had earlier carried a report on the city saying that the joint capital of India’s two most prosperous farming states is fast emerging as a future winner in the IT industry. Ready availability of skilled English speaking man-power, a strong local education system and over 50000 college students for possible employment was cited as some of the advantages.
The Chandigarh Technology Park (CTP) was recently accorded the Special economic zone status (SEZ) by the Indian govt. thus enabling the firms set up here to enjoy various tax benefits.
This is what the Czars of the IT industry had to say bout the city:
“The city has bright talent, high standard of living government support and a cosmopolitan outlook “
NANDAN NILEKANI
INFOSYS
CEO, President and MD
“Chandigarh is an outsider-friendly city. It is a cosmopolitan city and it enjoys a union territory status”
KIRAN KARNIK
NASSCOM
President
“Chandigarh is right on the top to become the next big “IT City”. The plusses include excellent quality of life and availability of talent.”
ROMI MALHOTRA
DELL
MD
AT the E–Revolution 2005, Outerbay has promised investment of Rs 20 crore initially. Mumbai based PATNI COMPUTERS has assured an investment of Rs 100 crore. Infosys has already set up operations here whereas IBM-daksh to invest very soon.
Conservative estimates say that 20000 jobs will be created in the coming three years.
With the Indian government encouraging FDI and operations in India being much cost effective Chandigarh indeed is the right place to invest.
